Van Hollen Applauds Newly Proposed RGGI Cap
Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen applauded the announcement that the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), the nation’s first market-based regulatory program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, has proposed a new cap that will strengthen the program and is projected to reduce 2020 power sector CO2 pollution more than 45 percent below 2005 levels.
“The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative has already generated more than $1.6 billion in economic value to the RGGI region while saving consumers over $1 billion on their electricity bills,” said Congressman Chris Van Hollen. “Today’s RGGI announcement will further reduce greenhouse gas pollution to more than 45 percent below their 2005 levels. It’s a triple win for our economy, our consumers and the environment.”
