Van Hollen Announces Winners of the 31st Annual Congressional Art Competition
Germantown, Silver Spring, Damascus, Potomac, Darnestown, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Rockville Students Win Honors

Washington, May 4, 2012 -

Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen announced the winners of the 31st annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students on April 30, 2012 at VisArts in Rockville, MD.  At this event, attended by over 300 students, teachers, principals, families, and friends, Congressman Van Hollen honored all the participants and this year’s winner, Annibel Rice.  Rice, a junior at Walt Whitman High School, will have her conté on charcoal paper, Isolation, displayed in the U.S. Capitol beginning in June for one year.  To see a photo of the winner, click here.

More than 260 students from 25 schools within the Eighth Congressional District participated in the competition. Congressman Van Hollen presented certificates of participation to each student who submitted artwork.  Jurors selected 95 entries to include in the exhibition that is on display at VisArts through May 17, 2012.  From these 95 entries, 15 student works were selected for special recognition.  These 15 works represent students from 10 different schools. Additional details on the students who were recognized are below.

First Place:

The winner’s artwork will be on display in the United States Capitol, beginning in June for one year and will join winning entries from every congressional district in the country.  The first place was awarded to:

Annibel Rice (from Bethesda), junior

The Jane E. Lawton Memorial Award:

This award honors the late Delegate Lawton for her exceptional service, undeniable exuberance, and devotion to the arts.  This award is for singular vision or unique use of materials, reflecting Delegate Lawton’s individuality and vitality.  This piece will hang in Congressman Van Hollen’s Rockville office for one year.  The 2012 winner of the Jane E. Lawton Memorial Award is:

 

Natithorn Bhusri (from Silver Spring), senior

John F. Kennedy High School, Silver Spring

VisArts Rising Star Award – High School:

Selected by Resident Artists at VisArts and the VisArts Gallery Director, this award honors a talented high school student with great potential for future artistic success.  Selection was based on technical skill, execution, inventiveness, and concept.  The 2012 winner of the VisArts Award is:
