Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on Maryland being selected as a winner of the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge:
“I congratulate the State of Maryland on winning the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge Grant today. Investments in early childhood education are the most effective way to close the achievement gap and give students the opportunity for success. Maryland is a national leader in this effort, and this award will allow the State to continue to raise standards, improve our child care workforce, and prepare every child for a lifetime of learning.”
BACKGROUND:
Maryland was one of nine winners of a Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge Grant from the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services. The total amount to be awarded is not finalized, but Maryland is eligible for $50 million over four years.
