Rockville, M.D, Jan 17, 2011 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

“Today, we pause to recognize the extraordinary life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A man deeply committed to justice and equality, he changed our nation for the better through the sheer courage of his convictions and power of his words. He worked tirelessly to extend the American Dream to all people of this great country, and it is because of his efforts that we live in a more just nation today.

“The hallmark of Dr. King’s work was non-violence – time and time again he made clear that ‘we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.’ As our nation continues to grieve the lives lost in the recent shooting in Tucson, Arizona and pray for the recovery of those who were injured, we must renew our commitment to express our differences while still respecting one another. As we honor Dr. King, we must not forget that there is far more that unites us as Americans than divides us.”
