Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on the House Republicans’ health care plan:

“Americans have been waiting nearly ten months for House Republicans’ health care plan. Their ‘bill’, created behind closed doors, does nothing to change the status quo and improve access to affordable health care for American families.  Their plan leaves 52 million people uninsured and, despite earlier claims to the contrary, their ‘bill’ does not end discrimination based on pre-existing conditions – it actually forces Americans with pre-existing conditions to pay up to 50 percent more than average for coverage, leaving many who are already sick to pay more than they can possible afford.

“After guaranteeing a bill for 140 days, House Republicans cobbled together a plan that only the insurance industry could love.  According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, not only does our plan do more to cut costs long term, but it covers more than 10 times the number of Americans.

“This is an historic moment for our nation.  Our health insurance reform plan will finally ensure families are no longer forced to go without health care because of soaring costs or pre-existing medical conditions.  The House Republican plan protects insurance companies at the expense of American families and businesses.”
