Washington, Oct 29, 2009 -

Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement applauding the introduction of the Affordable Health Care for America Act:

“Today, we take a historic step towards passing health care reform legislation that will lower costs for American families and small businesses, and ensure that millions more have access to affordable, quality health care.

“With countless hours of hearings and mark-ups and more than 2,000 public health care events, this has been one of the most open and transparent debates in Congress.  The bill Democrats are introducing today reflects Americans’ concerns about health care, and fixes a very broken system.

“Our bill will make sure American families have access to insurance when they need it most – and they will be able to afford it.  It helps small businesses that are currently struggling under the enormous cost of providing health care to their employees.  It strengthens Medicare and ensures young adults have health care during times of transition.  And it isn't just deficit neutral, but it actually cuts the deficit long term.

“I am proud to stand today with my colleagues in support of real health care reform.”
