United States Representative Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) today announced that Dr. John Butler, a National Institute of Standards (NIST) Research Chemist from Gaithersburg, Michele Culp, a U.S. Postal Service Inspector from Silver Spring, and Eileen Harrington, a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Associate Director for Marking Practices from Kensington, MD, have been named finalists for the 2004 Service to America Medals, a national award program that honors the outstanding accomplishments of America’s public servants. “It is all too easy to overlook the important contributions of the men and women in our federal workforce,” said Van Hollen. “But they are the heroes behind the headlines who make our nation work. Now more than ever, our country needs exceptional and dedicated federal employees and I commend these fine residents of my district for answering that call. Eight Service to America Medals awardees will be announced on September 28, 2004. Each awardee will receive a monetary award (from $3,000 to $10,000) The Service to America Medals program was created in 2002 by the Partnership for Public Service, a non-partisan, non-profit organization committed to recruiting and retaining excellence in the federal civil service.
