Van Hollen Statement on Jewish American Heritage Month
Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) today released the following statement: “During Jewish American Heritage Month, we pay tribute to American Jews and the contributions they have made throughout the history of the United States. The first Jewish immigrants came to this country seeking a place of freedom where they could practice their faith and live in peace. During this month, we celebrate the rich history of the American Jewish community and reflect on the contributions they have made to the fabric of American life, in fields as diverse as technology, literature, entertainment, politics and medicine. “The United States is a nation of immigrants, and is better and stronger because Jewish people from all over the world have chosen to become American citizens. Since their first arrivals in the 1600’s, American Jews have consistently strengthened our country. Their commitment to excellence has enriched our nation and enhanced our culture. Through strong ties to family and community, American Jews reflect a compassionate spirit, a willingness to help others, and set a positive example for others to follow.” “This Jewish American Heritage Month provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the many significant ways in which American Jews have enriched our culture and enhanced our way of life over the last 353 years.”
