Van Hollen Honors Road Crash Victims

Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) co-sponsored H. Con. Res. 87, which seeks to establish an annual day of remembrance for road crash victims.  The resolution would set aside the third Sunday of November as a day to promote road safety education and encourage memorial programming.  The United Nations has already designated the third Sunday of November as World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims.

"I am pleased to sponsor this important legislation," said Congressman Van Hollen.  "It is important that we work to educate those traveling abroad about road safety and road conditions and to remember those whose lives has been lost in road crashes."

The United Nations and World Health Organization have recognized the state of global road safety to be an international health crisis.  1,200,000 people die as a result of road crashes worldwide.  The World Health Organization predicts that by the year 2020 the annual death toll of motor vehicle collisions will exceed that of AIDS. The estimated yearly cost of global car crashes is $518 billion, costing individual countries an average of 1-3% of GNP.

The Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT) is the only U.S.-based international road safety organization dedicated to improving global road safety through education and advocacy.  ASIRT works under the premise that road crashes are predictable and preventable.  ASIRT educates travelers about existing conditions and supports local sustainable road safety partnerships in many countries to reduce the number of deaths and injuries associated with road crashes around the world.
