Washington, D.C. - Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) today joined Government Reform Committee Chairman Tom Davis (R-VA) and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) in sponsoring the D.C. Fair and Equal House Voting Rights Act of 2006. The new legislation would give the District of Columbia a full vote in the House.
This bill is the culmination of years of negotiations to ensure the legislation would not provide an advantage to either political party and would have a good chance of passage.
Davis, Norton, Van Hollen and other members of Congress worked to address concerns about the original DC voting rights legislation (H.R. 2043) and build a consensus for the new bill.
“This is great news for the District of Columbia,” said Van Hollen. “I am pleased that a mark-up is scheduled in the House Government Reform Committee for a piece of legislation that would give D.C. residents a voting representative in the House.”
The bill is set for consideration in the House Committee on Government Reform.
