Van Hollen Statement on the Death of Coretta Scott King

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) released the following statement today on the death of Coretta Scott King:

“Today I join all Americans and others around the world in mourning the death of Coretta Scott King, a woman who worked to create change so that all Americans would have the opportunity to experience true freedom and justice.  Mrs. King walked alongside her husband the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. until his untimely death.  It was her courage and steadfast resolve in the aftermath of this tragedy that led to the launching of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change and the designation of Martin Luther King Day as a federal holiday.

“As we prepare to begin our observance of Black History Month tomorrow, it is important that we recommit ourselves to continuing the work that Dr. and Mrs. King began more than 40 years ago.  I extend my deepest sympathies to Mrs. King’s family.  I hope that they can find solace in knowing that all Americans are grieving the loss of this courageous woman.”
