Washington, D.C. - Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) released the following statement today on the $2.5 trillion Fiscal Year 2006 Budget submitted to Congress by President Bush this morning:
“Our greatest responsibility is to leave our children a world that is safer, more prosperous, and more secure than the one we inherited. The budget President Bush released today fails that test. It is fiscally irresponsible. It is morally irresponsible. And it demonstrates a failure of leadership.
“On every issue facing our nation, it is our responsibility to ensure that the policies we pursue are consistent with the values we cherish. This budget demonstrates that President Bush is out of touch with America’s values and the real needs of the American people.
“During the coming months, I will fight for a budget that reflects the values of America’s middle class: national security, prosperity, opportunity, fairness, community, and accountability. A responsible budget is the first step towards building a future worthy of the trust of the American people, the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, and the aspirations of all of America’s children.”
