Van Hollen Statement on Remarks by Governor Ehrlich

Washington, D.C. - United States Representative Chris Van Hollen today released the following in response to recent comments made by Governor Ehrlich, in which he referred to “multiculturalism” as “crap” and “bunk”:

"One of Maryland’s greatest strengths is its multiculturalism. We are privileged to live in a community so rich in diversity.  I believe that the talents of many create the strength of one -- different perspectives and cultures working together to improve the world in which we live.  Our community consists of people of many nationalities and religions. In the days and months ahead, we need to recognize and promote the value of that diversity.

Governor Ehrlich’s statements are deeply troubling and reflect a complete lack of understanding of  what makes our county and our state strong.  I hope the Governor will to strive to develop a greater  understanding of the richness of our community and its diversity.”
