How can I find a federal job?
Federal job openings can be accessed by the official website at USAJOBS. This official website of the U.S.
Federal Government is the only website to use in applying for federal
jobs. It has an array of choices and guidance in how to find the
appropriate job, apply, and follow up. Whether you are a veteran, a
student, a senior citizen, a disabled person, or just someone looking for
employment, there is a way for you to find federal jobs on this website.
What kinds of jobs are available?
The federal government offers jobs in nearly every field, including
science, construction, administrative, and medicine. You can review a
list of federal occupational groups at the Office of Personnel Management.
How do I apply for a federal job?
Every vacancy announcement on USAJOBS includes a section with
applications directions called “How to Apply.” Application procedures
vary across agencies, so be sure to follow the directions included in the
vacancy announcement. You may be directed to use the online application
program, or to provide additional documentation such as college
transcripts or verification of veterans’ preference by mail or fax.
Do I have to take a civil service
exam?
There is no single civil service exam for all positions and many jobs do
not require a traditional test. The vacancy listing on USAJOBS will indicate if a specific test is
necessary.
How does the federal pay system
work?
For white collar employees, basic pay is set under the General Schedule
(GS) and is adjusted annually. Employees in GS positions in the
continental United States also receive locality pay. The current salary
tables and locality pay areas are available here.
For blue collar employees, basic pay is set under the Federal Wage System
(FWS). The rates for Montgomery and Prince George’s counties are
available here.
Employees in certain occupations and/or geographic areas may receive
special rates, which are higher rates than GS and locality rates.
Some agencies have statutory authority to administer their own pay
systems.
How do I make my application stand
out?
Please consult USAJOBS “Ten
Tips for Letting Federal Employers Know Your Worth” for tips on
resumes and cover letters.
What benefits does the Federal government
provide?
The Federal government offers a variety of benefits, including the
Federal Employees
Health Benefit Program, a flexible leave policy, a 3-part
retirement
program, and life
insurance. You can find more information about federal benefits
here.
What is the excepted service?
While most Federal government civilian positions are part of the
competitive civil service and require applicants to compete in an open
pool, some agencies are excluded from competitive civil service
procedures. These agencies have their own hiring system which establishes
the evaluation criteria they use in filling internal vacancies. Some
excepted service agencies include the FBI, CIA, Government Accountability
Office, U.S. Postal Service, and the Department of State.
To apply for a position at an excepted service agency, you should contact
the agency directly. You can find a list of excepted service agencies and
their contact information here.
